Summary: This one is not based on any episode - so maybe good, maybe not. I wrote a lot more and shortened it so it may or may not make sense, but I like it...lol. Basically the context is after a busy night for Zorro, but Diego is not sleepy, so up at dawn at a loose end. Maybe chapters in drabble form...

	1. Kittens in the loft

After scaling the ladder to the stable loft, Diego watched the black cat walk to her nest of kittens. Laying on his stomach, resting on his elbows, he watched the family for a while, in the dawn light.

Soothed by the sense of separation from the real world, he soon dozed off with the cats on the straw. It had been a long, hard night.

Waking when the cat rubbed against him, he chuckled at his situation. He stroked her. Four curious kittens peeked at him from their nest. A jet black one would be an ideal present for Victoria.

	2. Kitten in a Basket

It was close to siesta, and the pueblo was half asleep. Zorro crept up the side of the building, pulling the basket up with his whip after him, as he continued to the roof, and down to the kitchen. Lowering the basket down to the small kitchen table with the whip, he watched with delight as Victoria opened the basket with curiosity all over her beautiful face. The black kitten leapt out, its fur on edge, its back arching dramatically. Picking it up gently, she murmured soothing sounds.

Leaping down, Zorro immediately pulled her into his arms. "Happy birthday, Victoria."

	3. Kitten has a name

"What's the kitten's name?" Victoria had brought him into the kitchen to show the youngster off. The kitten blinked and arched its tiny back.

"What is wrong, bambino?" Victoria said, picking the kitten up. Bringing it close to Diego, she was surprised when the kitten spat and hissed. "You would think you had met before…"

"Poor little thing mustn't take to strangers well, that's all," Diego said. "It must be feeling very insecure…"

"Zorro galloped over. Lowering it by whip was most unfeeling. I don't understand that man sometimes."

"His name is Mystery."

"What a clever choice for a name."

	4. Kitten is mischievous

Zorro embraced Victoria passionately in the kitchen. Adrenalin and passion ran through his veins, making his heart beat quickly.

Something hit the kitchen floor with a loud crash. He sprung away from Victoria, ready to defend himself. He spun, sheltering next to a large cupboard, holding his breath.

"Mystery, you naughty kitten!" Victoria exclaimed. "Look at this mess!"

Zorro glanced towards her, laughter dancing in his eyes, as he slowly relaxed.

Fresh cream covered the kitchen floor, surrounded by shards of the jug it had been in. Mystery was enthusiastically lapping it up quickly, unconcerned at his mistress's rage.

	5. Kitten is wounded

Tears stained Victoria's cheeks and her eyes were red.

"What on earth is wrong? What's happened?" Diego went to her side, and she turned, collapsing against him. He instinctively drew her closer to him, draping his arms around her.

"Mystery…He's hurt," she murmured, against his chest. "I don't know what to do."

"Show me, Victoria."

She led him through the curtain, drying her eyes. "You think I'm stupid…"

"No, I don't."

Fresh scratches and gashes bled, the growing kitten had had his first fight.

"I'll make some ointment. He'll be fine."

	6. Affectionate Kitten

"Oh Mystery," Victoria said, sighing. It was her birthday. She was about to go to bed, a little disappointed that Zorro had not visited her. Mystery rubbed against her leg, and then leapt onto the table to nudge her face.

Stroking his warm silky fur, she felt his purr under her fingers. Where had Zorro found the kitten? There were so many things she didn't know about him. Where was he? She hadn't seen him for a week. Diego wasn't much better. He'd had a fall, hurting his arm. Catching a cold, he was likely to stay in bed indefinitely.

End file.
